The Third Fate
an immersive party
The Story
The Fates have lost one of their number to mysterious circumstances. Without a third, the will of the Eye is impossible to interpret and the world will fall into chaos and misfortune. Tonight they seek a third, and as such, have devised a test to aid their search.
The objective is to score the most luck for the night. The person who brings the most good luck wins and joins as the third fate. But beware, the follies of man may bring both good fortune and bad!
Tea Time
The night begins with tea time.
Each guest is seated around the table and invited to share in a wonder array of salty and sweet treats along with hot tea.
Suddenly, the music shifts and The Fates come out in matching cloaks to deliver the news.
Tonight they seek a third, and as such, have devised a test to aid their search.
The Talisman
The Fates give to each guest is a small black box tied with a bright red ribbon. Inside is their talisman for the night. They might get a buonocchio, a cornicello, or maybe a rabbit’s foot.
Each talisman holds a power or multiplier to be used during the test.
For example, the cornicello allows the wearer to share luck with one person, making it advantageous to team up with them.
The Game Begins
Every ritual earns you a certain amount of good luck. Some rituals will also earn bad luck. The candidate with the most luck at the end of the game wins.
Some tasks are multi-layered and complicated. Like the pennies.
Pennies will be placed in various locations. If they are heads, they can be picked up, but if they are tails they must be left there for another player to turn over into heads. Each penny turned in is 1 luck
Pennies can also be “invested”. Take a heads-up penny to the piggy bank and drop it in. Ten minutes later a fate will put a big penny next to the piggy bank. The big penny is worth 5 luck.
Some are smaller tasks that require more hunting.
Inside the piñata were stars that could be arranged on the constellation for 10 luck.
The Ritual + Crowning
The winner and now third fate is selected and given a matching cloak. She will lead the party out into the woods for the closing ritual.
A huge ojo de dios hangs from a tree, surrounded by unlit candles. Particpants light all the candles ending with the new fate lighting the candles on my head (since it was my birthday.)
Everyone then made lots of noise with strange instruments that laid under the ojo de dios to invite good luck into Jaina’s new year.
*this was a test run that I did for my 33rd birthday celebration. it is something I would love to develop. want to help? want to host? reach out. big thanks to Mathew Schwartzman for helping with the game design.*
